I think many would disagree. For me, and I suspect many others, the PMG was a way sideways from progressive rock into melodic jazz although since the stunning “The Way Up”, Pat has lost his way. An hour of solo baritone guitar may be nice, but there’s nothing better than singing along to ‘First Circle’ and not worrying about the words!!

It makes the very important point about musical communication. Metheny live is sensational and it’s probably my gig of the year but his more recent recorded leaves me less than enamoured sometimes. And I’m still not fully convinced about the Orchestrion.
